International Yoga Day 2024 is observed worldwide on June 21st, highlighting the profound benefits of yoga for physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead this year’s celebrations in Srinagar.
Yoga, originating from the Sanskrit word “yuj,” meaning “to join” or “to unite,” symbolizes the union of mind and body, thoughts and actions, and harmony between humans and nature. Each year, a specific theme guides International Yoga Day festivities, with 2024 focusing on “Yoga for Self and Society.”
Historically, yoga finds its roots in ancient India, but its global recognition was propelled in September 2014 when Prime Minister Modi proposed the idea of an International Day of Yoga during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly. His vision emphasized yoga’s holistic benefits, promoting health and well-being.
Acknowledging its significance, the UNGA declared June 21st as International Yoga Day on December 11, 2014.
Yoga’s popularity has since soared worldwide, with millions embracing its practices to alleviate stress, enhance flexibility, strength, balance, and mental clarity through physical postures, breathing exercises, and meditation.
This year, Prime Minister Modi will commemorate the 10th International Yoga Day in Srinagar, underscoring its importance with a public address and participation in a yoga session. Simultaneously, celebrations will unfold at the UN Headquarters in New York, emphasizing yoga’s universal appeal and enduring impact on global wellness.
International Yoga Day 2024 continues to unite communities in a shared pursuit of health, harmony, and inner peace, reinforcing yoga’s timeless message of holistic living.
