Following President Joe Biden’s unexpected decision to end his re-election campaign, Vice President Kamala Harris has emerged as the focal point for Democrats, netting a staggering $100 million in online donations.
Major Democratic donors, including heiress Abigail Disney, who had previously withheld contributions over concerns about Biden, are now throwing their support behind Harris, CNBC reports.
The shift in momentum has seemingly influenced West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, who recently hinted at a potential challenge to Harris but now appears to be backing down.
Meanwhile, Republicans are scrambling to adjust their strategy originally designed to defeat Biden to one capable of confronting a very different opponent.
Harris’s campaign reported raising $49.6 million in grassroots donations within hours of her announcement. Additionally, ActBlue, the Democratic fundraising platform, processed a record-breaking $67 million on Sunday alone, marking its best day since records began in 2020.
