Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Kargil today to mark the 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, paying tribute to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the 1999 conflict. Modi’s visit to the Kargil War Memorial in Dras was a poignant reminder of the bravery shown by Indian forces during the Kargil War.
During the ceremony, Modi honored the fallen heroes alongside other prominent figures, including President Droupadi Murmu and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. “Kargil Vijay Diwas is a moment for our nation to recognize the unmatched courage and sacrifice of our armed forces. I bow to the memory of every soldier who defended our country on the heights of Kargil,” President Murmu stated on X.
In addition to his tribute, Modi launched the Shinkun La Tunnel Project, which aims to construct a 4.1 km twin-tube tunnel at an altitude of 15,800 feet. This tunnel, once completed, will be the highest in the world and is expected to enhance all-weather connectivity to Leh, boost military mobility, and spur economic growth in Ladakh.
Modi used the occasion to criticize the opposition’s stance on the Agnipath recruitment scheme, intensifying political debate. The Shinkun La Tunnel will play a crucial role in improving infrastructure and defense logistics in the region.
