In a significant diplomatic engagement, Indian National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval met with Myanmar’s NSA Admiral Moe Aung to address the escalating violence and instability in Myanmar. Doval is in Myanmar for the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (Bimstec) security chiefs’ summit.
This marks one of the first high-profile visits from India to Myanmar since the military coup in February 2021. The junta, which has been struggling to maintain control, has faced severe setbacks from resistance forces and armed groups since a coordinated offensive began in October last year.
With Myanmar’s military suffering numerous defeats and key trading posts being captured by resistance forces along the borders with India, Bangladesh, and China, New Delhi is increasingly concerned about the spillover effects on its northeastern states.
The Indian embassy in Myanmar confirmed that Doval’s visit included a meeting with Admiral Moe Aung and participation in the fourth annual Bimstec security chiefs’ meeting in Naypyitaw. Doval’s discussions with his Myanmar counterpart focused on the security implications for India’s border regions and the broader regional impact.
During the Bimstec summit, Doval also addressed key issues such as counterterrorism, drug trafficking, arms smuggling, and organized crime. He highlighted the importance of Bimstec connectivity, the second port conclave, and the water security of Himalayan river systems.
Before arriving in Myanmar, Doval represented India at the state funeral of Vietnam’s General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong in Hanoi, where he extended India’s condolences to Vietnamese leaders and the general’s family.
