Swapnil Kusale has become a national hero, securing India’s third medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The 28-year-old shooter won bronze in the men’s 50m 3 positions final, making a stellar debut at the Games. With a score of 451.4, Kusale narrowly missed a higher medal but has still marked his Olympic debut with a significant achievement.

Kusale, from a farming family in Maharashtra, began his sports journey in 2009 with Krida Prabhodini, a Maharashtra government sports program. After a year of rigorous training, he chose shooting and quickly made his mark. He won gold in the junior category at the 2015 Asian Shooting Championships in Kuwait and excelled at national competitions, including the 59th and 61st National Shooting Championships.

Securing his spot for the Paris Olympics came after a series of trials, culminating in a final spot on May 17, 2024. Earlier, he had earned an Olympic quota by finishing fourth at the 2022 World Championships in Cairo.

Kusale’s path to the Olympics wasn’t smooth. He faced health challenges, including a chronic tonsil issue, later diagnosed as lactose intolerance. This condition caused severe pain and fever, affecting his performance. Despite these hurdles, Kusale persevered and overcame these issues to shine at the Games.

What sets Kusale apart is his remarkable parallel with cricket legend MS Dhoni. Like Dhoni, Kusale balances a demanding career—he’s a ticket collector with Central Railways since 2015—while pursuing excellence in his sport. Kusale’s calm under pressure, akin to Dhoni’s famed composure on the cricket field, is a key part of his success.

“Dhoni’s journey is incredibly inspiring,” Kusale said. “His focus and ability to perform under pressure motivate me greatly. While I look up to many in shooting, Dhoni’s story resonates the most with me.”

Kusale’s achievement at the Paris Olympics not only highlights his skill and dedication but also mirrors the humble yet remarkable rise of one of India’s sporting icons.
