In a decisive move echoing its commitment to its allies, Norway announced plans to shutter its border to Russian tourists, marking the termination of their direct access to the Schengen area, Europe’s border-free zone.

Effective May 29, the majority of Russian tourists will find themselves barred from Norway’s borders, a decision underscored by Justice and Public Security Minister Emilie Enger Mehl as part of Norway’s solidarity in the face of Russia’s illegal aggression towards Ukraine.

While Norway, a NATO member but not part of the EU, had previously restricted tourist visas for Russians after Moscow’s incursion into Ukraine, exemptions existed for certain visa holders. However, come May 29, these exceptions will cease, with access limited to essential purposes like work, study, or visiting immediate family members.

Collaborating closely with the European Union, Norway’s stance aligns with the bloc’s previous actions against Russian interests, reflecting a united front amidst geopolitical tensions.

As Norway fortifies its border controls, the Russian Embassy in Oslo has remained silent on the matter, declining to comment on the development. With diplomatic strains persisting, Norway’s expulsion of Russian embassy staff in 2023 and recent statements from the Norwegian intelligence service hint at ongoing concerns regarding Russian activities, underscoring the gravity of the situation as both countries navigate the aftermath of escalating tensions.
