In a daring and humanitarian operation, the Indian Navy executed a successful medical evacuation of an injured Chinese mariner from a bulk carrier, approximately 370 kilometers off the coast of Mumbai.
The Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre (MRCC) in Mumbai received a distress call on July 23 from the bulk carrier ZHONG SHAN MEN, reporting critical injuries and heavy blood loss suffered by a 51-year-old Chinese crew member. The urgent request for evacuation prompted an immediate response from Indian Naval Air Station INS Shikra.
Amid challenging weather conditions, including winds exceeding 45 knots and heavy rolling of the ship, a Seaking helicopter was dispatched at 0550 hrs. Indian Navy personnel braved the adverse elements to successfully airlift the injured mariner from the precarious bridge wing of the vessel.
Following the daring rescue, the injured mariner was swiftly transported back to INS Shikra by the Indian Navy helicopter. From there, he was transferred to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment.
The official spokesperson of the Indian Navy shared video footage and images of the operation, highlighting the complexities faced during the evacuation. “Challenging weather conditions with winds over 45 knots & heavy rolling of the ship were compounded by non-availability of the continuous deck,” the spokesperson noted.
Acknowledging the collaborative effort, the spokesperson emphasized, “The safe & timely evacuation of the patient was a result of #jointoperation coordinated by MRCC (MBI) with #IndianNavy.” The Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Samrat was also diverted to assist in the operation, ensuring comprehensive support.
The heroic efforts of the Indian Navy drew praise from netizens across social media platforms. Users commended the bravery and dedication of the Navy personnel involved in the rescue operation. “Saviour of the sea. Indian Navy,” expressed one user, reflecting the sentiment echoed by many.
Another user recalled past feats of bravery, adding, “Reminds me of a few of our DaredevilSeaKing pilots who had saved many seafarers in adverse weather conditions… Well Done guys. Keep the breed growing.”
Overall, the successful evacuation underscored the Indian Navy’s readiness and capability to respond swiftly to maritime emergencies, reaffirming its commitment to humanitarian missions and international maritime safety.
