The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is weighing the use of a polygraph test for Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, amid its ongoing probe into the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor. The test could help clarify discrepancies found in Ghosh’s statements during his interrogation.
Earlier this month, the young doctor was found raped and murdered in a hospital seminar room where she had gone to rest during a grueling 36-hour shift. Sanjoy Roy, a local civic volunteer, was arrested after his Bluetooth headphones were discovered near the crime scene.
Ghosh, who stepped down from his position two days after the murder, has been under intensive questioning. The CBI is examining whether the crime was part of a larger conspiracy. Key points of inquiry include Ghosh’s initial reaction to the murder and the delay in returning the victim’s body to her family.
A CBI source revealed, “There are inconsistencies in some of Ghosh’s responses. To clear up these discrepancies, we are considering a polygraph test.”
The investigation has also focused on Ghosh’s communication following the murder and the authorization for recent renovations in the rooms adjacent to the crime scene.
The CBI recently secured a court order for a polygraph test for Sanjoy Roy. This step follows criticism from the Calcutta High Court, which questioned the delay in questioning Ghosh. The Supreme Court also criticized the West Bengal government for its handling of the case, particularly the delay in filing the FIR and Ghosh’s initial attempt to label the murder as a suicide.
