The Indian government has made a significant announcement regarding the leadership of the Indian Army, appointing Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi as the next Chief of Army Staff. Currently serving as the Vice Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Dwivedi will step into his new role on June 30, succeeding General Manoj Pande.
This decision comes as General Manoj Pande’s tenure, extended by one month amidst the Lok Sabha elections, draws to a close on June 30. Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi emerges as the natural successor, being the senior-most official after Gen Pande.
Born on July 1, 1964, Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi brings with him nearly four decades of dedicated service to the Indian Army. His illustrious career spans a variety of Command, Staff, Instructional, and Foreign appointments, showcasing his leadership capabilities and strategic acumen.
Lt Gen Dwivedi has held key Command roles, including leading the 18 Jammu & Kashmir Rifles Regiment and commanding the 26 Sector Assam Rifles Brigade. His experience also extends to critical staff positions, such as Deputy Inspector General of Assam Rifles (East) and Director General Infantry.
Having served as the General Officer Commanding in Chief at the Northern Command headquarters from 2022 to 2024, Lt Gen Dwivedi has demonstrated his operational prowess and leadership in challenging environments.
An accomplished scholar, Lt Gen Dwivedi is an alumnus of esteemed institutions like Sainik School Rewa, the National Defence College, and the US Army War College. His academic achievements include an MPhil in Defence & Management Studies and Master’s Degrees in Strategic Studies and Military Science.
Throughout his career, Lt Gen Dwivedi has been honored with prestigious awards, including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), and three GOC-in-C Commendation Cards, recognizing his exceptional service and dedication to the nation.
