In a recent address at the 21st BSF Investiture Ceremony, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval lauded Israel for its robust defense against a series of missile attacks from Iran, highlighting its exemplary use of technology to thwart the aggression. Doval cited the efficient interception of 99% of the 1,500 missiles launched, emphasizing the strength of Israel’s technological prowess.

He pointed out the crucial role of intelligence gathering in national security, stressing that India, with its vast population and extensive borders, is well-positioned to mount a formidable defense. Doval noted that the October 7 attack on Israel, which saw hundreds of Hamas infiltrators breaching its territory, was a consequence of inadequate tactical intelligence.

“We are fortunate to have a huge force, a bustling population on our borders. Villagers here, familiar with terrains and local languages, can serve as eyes and ears for the forces in intelligence gathering,” he said, underscoring the importance of local cooperation in border security.

Doval also commended the Border Security Forces (BSF) for their exceptional work in guarding India’s frontiers and assisting in internal security during special occasions. He highlighted the wisdom of Chanakya, the ancient strategist, stating, “You can’t control the borders where the local population is hostile to you.”

He advised a friendly and cooperative approach towards the border population, ensuring they do not feel oppressed by the presence of uniformed forces. “You must befriend the border population. Locals shouldn’t feel that people in uniforms are here to control them, to impose restrictions on them, to make their lives more regulated and complicated. It should be rather friendly and warm,” Doval said, emphasizing the importance of maintaining positive relations with those living near the borders.
