Authorities have apprehended a man from Hoshiarpur district in Punjab on suspicions of spying for Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), police announced on Friday.
The individual stands accused of aiding anti-India activities by allegedly sharing sensitive information regarding Indian Army deployments and transmitting documents and photos from his mobile phone, law enforcement officials revealed.
Acting on received intelligence, police arrested Harpreet Singh near a railway crossing on Phagwara Road in Hoshiarpur on Thursday evening. Singh, originally from Tarn Taran district, had been residing in the Vijay Nagar area of Hoshiarpur.
Reportedly, Singh, a resident of the city for the past four years, had traveled to Pakistan twice on a visitor visa, where he allegedly met ISI officials. Authorities claim he maintained contact with these officials via WhatsApp.
Allegedly using false documents, Singh procured Indian SIM cards and assisted ISI officials in utilizing WhatsApp and other internet applications to coordinate anti-India activities, according to police. Upon apprehension, authorities recovered a bag containing an Aadhaar card, a passport, some Indian currency, and a mobile phone from Singh. Interrogations are ongoing, with law enforcement officials expecting further disclosures.
The suspect has been charged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Information Technology Act, and the Official Secrets Act, 1923, as per an FIR registered at Model Town Police Station on Thursday night.
