Sony Pictures Entertainment is making waves in the entertainment industry by delving into the exhibition business. The studio, known for recent hits like “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” and “The Garfield Movie,” announced on Wednesday its acquisition of the renowned theater chain Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, along with the genre film festival Fantastic Fest.

With this deal, Sony intends to maintain Alamo Drafthouse’s reputation as a premier destination for moviegoers, complete with its distinctive dine-in experience. The acquisition emphasizes Sony’s commitment to fostering a diverse range of cinematic offerings, welcoming content from various studios and distributors at Alamo Drafthouse locations.

Founded in 1997 as a single-screen repertory theater in Austin, Texas, Alamo Drafthouse has since expanded to 35 locations across North America, captivating audiences with its unique blend of quality cinema, culinary delights, and a vibrant atmosphere beloved by cinephiles.

Tim League, the visionary behind Alamo Drafthouse, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “We are beyond thrilled to join forces with Sony Pictures Entertainment to expand our company vision to be the best damn cinema that has ever, or will ever, exist now in ways we could only ever dream of.” League highlighted the shared values between Alamo Drafthouse and Sony, emphasizing their mutual respect for cinema’s transformative power and cultural significance.

For Sony, the acquisition of Alamo Drafthouse aligns with its broader experiences initiatives, which include immersive entertainment offerings like the Wheel of Fortune Live! Traveling tour and the Wonderverse space in Chicago. Ravi Ahuja, President and Chief Operating Officer of Sony Pictures Entertainment, noted the synergy between Alamo Drafthouse and the studio’s Crunchyroll films, catering to the diverse interests of cinema enthusiasts.

While Alamo Drafthouse has weathered challenges in the past, including a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in March 2021, the company emerged stronger under new ownership, led by League, Altamont Capital Partners, and Fortress Investment Group. Michael Kusterman, appointed as Alamo CEO, will continue to spearhead operations within the newly established Sony Pictures Experiences division.

The acquisition marks a significant shift in the entertainment landscape, reflecting evolving dynamics between studios, theaters, and audiences.
